How a private kitchen differs from a shared one, induction or gas, what pots are supplied, where to buy vegetables and meat, cleaning, hours. Real examples.

Yes, plenty of Đà Lạt homestays have a kitchen, but it comes in two very different forms: a private kitchen inside your room or cottage, or a shared kitchen the whole house uses during set hours. A private kitchen suits families who want to cook several meals; a shared one is enough for one dinner or late-night noodles. At Nhà Sương there are two private kitchens, in Bếp Nhỏ (Kitchen Room: induction hob, pots, plates, kettle, fridge, table for four) and in Nhà Vườn (Garden House: a small kitchen), plus a 24 m² shared kitchen open from 07:00 to 21:30.

_Updated 6 October 2026._

I am Lan. I do the housekeeping and cook the hot dish at breakfast every morning, so I see where guests get stuck in a kitchen that is not theirs.

## Private or shared

| | Private kitchen | Shared kitchen |
| --------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------ |
| Who uses it | Only your room | Every guest in the house |
| Hours | Whenever you like, quietly after 22:00 | The house’s opening hours |
| Where food goes | Your own fridge | Ask whether there is a shelf for you |
| Suits | Families with small children, stays of three nights or more | Couples or friends cooking one meal |

Listings usually give the kitchen one line. Phú An Home lists a shared kitchen and a barbecue area; Yokoso has family rooms and a shared kitchen. One line does not tell you whether you can cook dinner for four.

## Five things to ask before you book

1. **Induction or gas?** Induction needs pans with a magnetic base. A clay pot you bought at the market will not work on it.
2. **Which pots and pans?** One pot and one pan feed two people, not four.
3. **Is there a fridge, and a freezer compartment?** You want one if you shop once for two days.
4. **When does the shared kitchen open and close?** Many houses close it early so other guests can sleep.
5. **Who washes up, and where does the rubbish go?** Ask now, not at check-out.

## The kitchens at Nhà Sương

**[Bếp Nhỏ (Kitchen Room)](/en/rooms/kitchen-room).** 34 m² on the ground floor with a 10 m² terrace on the pine garden, a king bed (1.8 x 2.0 m), room for one extra bed, up to 3 guests. The private kitchen has an induction hob, pots, plates, a kettle, a fridge and a table for four. It is 12 steps from the lounge (58 from the gate), one of the two rooms with the fewest steps, which matters when you carry shopping bags back.

**[Nhà Vườn (Garden House)](/en/rooms/garden-house).** A separate house in the garden, 52 m² with a 12 m² terrace, two bedrooms (a king, and two 1.2 m singles), up to 4 guests. It has a small kitchen and a wood stove in the living room, 16 steps from the lounge. The kitchen is smaller than the Kitchen Room’s; if you plan a big meal, message Ngân at the front desk and she will tell you exactly what is there.

**The shared kitchen.** 24 m², open 07:00 to 21:30, for guests in any room. It closes at 21:30 so everyone can wash up before our quiet hours (22:00 to 07:00). Wash and put away your own dishes, and put rubbish in the bin in the corner. Food in the fridge goes in a bag with your room name on it.

## What guests forget to buy

The kitchens have things to cook with, not things to cook. This is what guests forget most, in order of how often I end up lending it:

- Salt.
- Cooking oil.
- Washing-up liquid.
- Fish sauce (nước mắm), sugar, pepper.
- Shallots and garlic.
- Rice, if you want rice.

Buy small bottles. Two or three nights will not finish a big one.

## Where to buy food

Most guests shop at Đà Lạt market (chợ Đà Lạt) or a supermarket in the centre. We have not measured the route from our alley to the market or to each supermarket, so we give no distances or walking times here. Ask Vinh or Ngân in the lounge and they will point the way. If you do not speak Vietnamese, ask us to write your shopping list in Vietnamese before you go. In strawberry season I make jam, and if you ask I will tell you where I buy the fruit.

One tip: buy for one day at a time. Vegetables bought in the morning taste best cooked that evening, and the room fridge is smaller than the one at home.

## Four dishes I cook in one pot on an induction hob

These are things I really cook for my own family in the evening, with no special knife work:

1. **Mushroom and greens hotpot (lẩu).** Boil water with a few slices of ginger and some salt, add mushrooms, mustard greens, cabbage and tofu. Put the pot in the middle of the table for four and add as you eat.
2. **Chicken and ginger rice porridge (cháo gà).** A handful of rice, one chicken leg, crushed ginger, spring onion. Cook on low and stir a few times. Good on a cold night and for small children.
3. **Pumpkin soup with minced pork.** Fry shallots, brown the pork, add water and chunks of pumpkin. Done when the pumpkin is soft.
4. **Boiled sweet potato and corn.** The easiest of all; eat it with hot tea on the porch around 20:00.

## When you would rather not cook

Breakfast for two is included in the room rate, served in the lounge from 07:30 to 09:30, with a different hot dish each day. In the evening we offer a [fireside dinner](/en/experiences/fireside-dinner): 280,000 VND per person, from four people, 18:30 to 20:30, booked 24 hours ahead. The pine garden has a grill yard; if you want to barbecue, tell Ngân beforehand so we can set it up.

## Rates for the two kitchen rooms

Nhà Sương is a homestay that sells rooms, so these are our own rates, and I am biased towards the kitchen rooms; read with that in mind. Per night, including VAT, service charge and breakfast for two:

| Room | Regular, Sun to Thu | Regular, Fri and Sat | Low season, Sun to Thu |
| ------------ | ------------------- | -------------------- | ---------------------- |
| Kitchen Room | 1,950,000 VND | 2,440,000 VND | 1,660,000 VND |
| Garden House | 2,950,000 VND | 3,690,000 VND | 2,510,000 VND |

A third or fourth adult is 350,000 VND a night; children aged 6 to 11 are 200,000 VND a night with breakfast. Stays of five nights or more in low or regular season get 10% off every night, which helps if you are working remotely. Every season is on the [rates page](/en/rates).

## Someone who cooked here

Hannah, who works remotely for a software company and lives in Ho Chi Minh City, stayed five weeknights in Gác Mây (Cloud Loft, no private kitchen), Sunday 12 April to Friday 17 April 2026\. She worked at the big table in the lounge from 08:00 and cooked dinner in the shared kitchen. The room came to 1,350,000 VND x 5 nights = 6,750,000 VND, less 10% for five nights: 6,075,000 VND. Her 30% deposit was 1,823,000 VND, with 4,252,000 VND paid on arrival.

## The kitchen is one of six questions

A kitchen is one of six things worth asking any homestay before you pay a deposit. [Choosing a Đà Lạt homestay](/en/guide/choosing-a-dalat-homestay) covers all six, and more on where to stay is under [where to stay](/en/guide/topic/where-to-stay).
