Sunrise cloud hunting: car leaves at 04:45, you are back for breakfast

Our car leaves the gate at 04:45. Vinh drives you up Đa Phú hill or Cầu Đất, depending on the wind that day, and has you back for breakfast at 07:30. 350,000 VND per car, up to four people, booked 12 hours ahead. Whether there are clouds is up to the morning.

A sea of white cloud fills the valleys around Đà Lạt at sunrise, a pink band on the horizon, green treetops in the foreground

How it runs

  1. 16:45

    Book the day before

Tell Ngân at least 12 hours ahead, so by 16:45 the day before. That evening Vinh checks the rain and wind and picks the hill.

  2. 04:30

    Up and dressed warm

Meet in the lounge. Warm layers, soft-soled shoes and a torch: the 46 stone steps down to the gate are still dark.

  3. 04:45

    Leave the gate

Vinh drives. Đa Phú is about 10 km and Cầu Đất about 23 km from the centre of Đà Lạt.

  4. 05:00

    Wait on the hill

The usual cloud window is 05:00 to 07:30. On a good day the valley below fills with white; on a clear one you watch the light come up over the hills.

  5. 07:30

    Back for breakfast

The car drops you at the gate. Breakfast in the lounge runs 07:30 to 09:30. The stove is not lit in the morning, but the coffee is hot.

Dalat cloud hunting (săn mây) is a local habit: get up in the dark, drive to a hilltop, and wait to see whether the valley below has filled with cloud. We handle the car and the driver. Vinh meets you in the lounge at 04:30, the car leaves the gate at 04:45, and you are back in time for breakfast at 07:30.

We do not promise clouds. Some mornings the valley is a white sea; some mornings it is just a sunrise over the hills. You are paying for the car, not the clouds.

Which hill

Vinh decides the evening before, based on rain and wind. The two he uses most are Đa Phú hill and Cầu Đất. Distances below are from the centre of Đà Lạt, as given by a Mia.vn guide we read on 4 October 2026; we have not measured them from our own gate.

Hill Distance from the centre
Robin Hill about 2 km
Đa Phú about 10 km
Langbiang about 18 km
Cầu Đất about 23 km

When it works best

Clouds tend to be clearer in the dry season, from roughly October or November to April. Sources disagree on the starting month, hence “roughly”. In the rainy season (late April to October) we still go on mornings without rain.

Price and booking

350,000 VND per car, up to four people, at least 12 hours’ notice. Add it to your request on the booking page or message Ngân. If you would rather watch from your room than climb a hill, look at the Sun Porch, with its east-facing porch, or the Mist Suite, glass on two sides over the valley. Vinh’s longer guide to cloud hunting in Đà Lạt covers timing, clothing and what the empty mornings are like. Everything else we arrange is on /en/experiences.

Questions

If there are no clouds, do I get a refund?

No. The 350,000 VND pays for the car and the driver that morning, not for the clouds. We say so upfront so you can decide whether to go.

What if it rains?

If it is pouring or the road is slippery, Vinh tells you and the car does not go, and you are not charged. The rainy season runs from late April to October.

Can five of us go?

One car takes up to four people. Five or more need two cars, 350,000 VND each, if a second car is free that morning; ask Ngân first.
