Cloud Hunting in Đà Lạt: What Time, Where, What to Wear
The 05:00 to 07:30 window, the clearest months, Đa Phú at about 10 km, Cầu Đất at about 23 km, Langbiang at about 18 km from the centre. Shoes, layers, limits.

Cloud hunting (săn mây) in Đà Lạt means standing on a hilltop before 05:00 and staying until about 07:30, looking down at cloud lying in the valleys. It works best in the dry months, roughly October or November to April. The four hills people name most, measured from the town centre: Robin Hill about 2 km, Đa Phú about 10 km, Langbiang about 18 km, Cầu Đất about 23 km. Wear layers and soft-soled shoes, bring a torch. Nobody can promise the clouds: they depend on the wind and the humidity that morning.
Updated 6 October 2026.
I am Vinh. At Nhà Sương I light the wood stoves in the evening and drive the early cloud-hunting runs. This is what I tell guests in the lounge the night before, when they ask what time they really have to get up.
The timing
Vietnamese travel guides give 05:00 to 07:30 as the window. Before 05:00 it is still fully dark; once the sun is up, the cloud in the valleys usually thins and burns off. Working backwards, a morning with the house car looks like this:
| What | When |
|---|---|
| Get up, dress, fill a flask | 04:15 to 04:30 |
| Car leaves the gate | 04:45 |
| On the hill | mostly between 05:00 and 07:00, depending on which hill |
| Back at the house | before 07:30 |
| Breakfast in the lounge | 07:30 to 09:30 |
There are 46 stone steps from our gate up to the lounge, and at 04:45 they are dark, so I wait at the bottom with a torch.
Which months, and which mornings to skip
The guides agree that the dry season gives clearer cloud seas but disagree on when it starts, October or November, so we say “roughly October or November to April”. Đà Lạt’s rainy season runs from late April to October, with about 160 rainy days a year. Fog comes on about 80 to 85 days a year, mostly in September and October; when fog sits right on the hilltop, you are standing inside the cloud, not above it.
Mornings when I tell people to stay in bed:
- Rain overnight that carries into the morning. Dirt paths on the hills turn slick, and so does our alley. If the alley is too wet for the car, I say so the evening before.
- Strong wind. The cloud moves off fast, and the top of a hill is far colder than the town.
- A long drive the same day. Getting up at 04:15 and then driving to Ho Chi Minh City is not something I recommend.
No forecast says “cloud sea tomorrow”. I check the sky from the yard at 04:00; if it looks wrong, I message you on Zalo (the Vietnamese messaging app most people here use) before 04:15 so you can sleep on.
Which hill
| Hill | From the Đà Lạt centre | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Robin Hill | about 2 km | The closest; fine if you only want a short outing |
| Đa Phú | about 10 km | Second closest; time to stand on the hill and still be back for breakfast |
| Langbiang | about 18 km | Further out; leave on time |
| Cầu Đất | about 23 km | The furthest here; the earliest start |
These distances are from the town centre, as given by Mia.vn, not from our gate. We have not measured the roads from our alley to each hill, so we do not quote them. We also have no checked source for entrance fees, so we leave them out: carry some cash and ask at the gate.
Which hill gives the better view depends on the wind. The evening before, we pick one together based on how long you want to stay up there and whether you need to be back early.
Ride yourself or come with us
On your own motorbike. Fine if you are used to mountain roads. At 04:30 the roads are dark and quiet, and the surface can be wet with dew. Go slowly, check your lights, and wear a windproof jacket: riding at dawn is colder than standing still. Tell the front desk the evening before so we can show you how the gate opens; reception is staffed 07:00 to 22:00, and the house keeps quiet hours from 22:00 to 07:00.
With the house car. The sunrise cloud-hunting car is 350,000 VND per car. It leaves the gate at 04:45 and is back for breakfast at 07:30. Book at least 12 hours ahead, which means by 16:45 the day before. The details are on the sunrise cloud-hunting page, and all extras sit next to the room rates on the rates page. You pay for the drive, not for the clouds: on a clear morning I still have you back for breakfast.
What to wear and bring
- Layers. December and January nights in Đà Lạt drop to 10°C to 12°C, and a hilltop at dawn feels colder because of the wind. A thermal top, a sweater, a windproof jacket, a beanie and thin gloves you can work a camera in. If you came up from Ho Chi Minh City in summer clothes, pack the jacket you never wear there.
- Soft-soled shoes with grip. The paths are usually packed dirt and wet in the early morning. Sandals slip.
- A torch. A phone light works, but you will want the phone for photos, so bring a power bank too.
- A flask. Fill it with hot water in the lounge the night before.
- A lens cloth. When the cloud rises, lenses fog up within minutes.
Mornings without clouds
I drive more cloudless mornings than guests expect. Some are clear, with every ridge sharp and the sun coming up behind the hills. Some are so foggy you cannot see the person three steps away. Some have a thin band of cloud low in one valley that you only notice if you look for it. Most people come back happy enough, but I would rather nobody went out sure of a cloud sea.
My one piece of advice: if you stay two nights, go on the first morning, not the last. If the first morning is clear, you still have another try; on the last morning you only have check-out at 12:00.
Not getting up at 04:15: the view from a room
Nhà Sương is a homestay that sells rooms, so this part is about our own rooms; read it with that in mind.
- Hiên Nắng (Sun Porch): 28 m² plus an 8 m² east-facing timber porch, with the sun coming up behind the pine hill. 22 steps from the lounge (68 from the gate). Regular season: 1,750,000 VND on Sunday to Thursday nights, 2,190,000 VND on Friday and Saturday nights.
- Phòng Sương (Mist Suite): the 36 m² top-floor corner, glass on two sides over the valley, the best seat in the house for morning mist. 30 steps from the lounge (76 from the gate). Regular season: 2,350,000 VND midweek, 2,940,000 VND on Friday and Saturday.
Nights from 20 December to 28 February are peak: Sun Porch 2,280,000 VND midweek and 2,840,000 VND at the weekend; Mist Suite 3,060,000 VND and 3,820,000 VND. Every rate includes VAT, service charge and breakfast for two. A window is not the same as a hilltop, and it does not promise mist either; it just gives you two more hours of sleep.
Where it fits in a trip
In our three-day Đà Lạt itinerary, cloud hunting is the morning of day two, then breakfast, then the vintage train in the afternoon. If you have not picked your month yet, Đà Lạt month by month sets out rain, mist, flowers and our rates for all twelve.
