Sun Porch: a large bed with a grey quilt under a wood-lined A-frame roof, a floor-to-roof glass gable with sheer curtains on each side, an armchair by the glass, trees and hills outside in early sun

What the window faces

The whole front is a sliding glass door, floor to ceiling, opening onto an 8 m² east-facing timber porch on the first floor. The sun comes up behind the hill in front; on cloudy days you just watch it get light.

Sun Porch (Hiên Nắng) is a 28 m² room on the first floor whose whole front is a floor-to-ceiling glass door opening onto an 8 m² timber porch facing east. If what you want from a Dalat homestay is a sunrise porch, this is the room for it: two wooden chairs, a cup of coffee, and on clear mornings the sun coming up behind the hill in front of you.

Bed and bathroom

A 1.8 x 2.0 m king bed, one continuous mattress. For three people we add an extra bed; at 28 m² there is still room to walk, but the open floor by the glass gets smaller. Private bathroom with hot water.

Cold nights

There is no stove in Sun Porch. All that glass gives you a lot of daylight, and at night the room loses heat faster than one with timber walls, so shut the door properly once it is dark. The king bed and the extra bed both have electric blankets, warmed by Lan before you come in. December and January nights in Đà Lạt can drop to 10°C to 12°C.

In the evening the shared wood stove in the lounge is lit by Vinh from 18:00 to 22:00. It heats the lounge, not the first floor.

From the gate to the room

46 stone steps from the gate to the lounge, then 22 up to the first floor: 68 in all. Vinh carries the bags. No lift.

Worth knowing

  • Sunrise depends on the day. The porch faces east, but in rain or heavy cloud you only see the sky lighten. The rainy season runs from late April to October.
  • Light comes in early. Late sleepers should pick another room or bring an eye mask.
  • On rainy days the timber porch is wet and slippery; wear shoes with grip.
  • To go further for the clouds, our car leaves the gate at 04:45 and has you back for breakfast at 07:30: see sunrise cloud hunting and the guide to cloud hunting in Đà Lạt. For a full plan from the house, read three days in Đà Lạt.
